Clean room: what is the definition?

Some sectors of activity require impeccable air quality in order to carry out research or produce different objects. These include chemical and bacteriological experiments, and biological research.

A cleanroom is therefore essential for these professionals, as it allows them to work in a space that is completely free of impure particles naturally present in the air. Its primary function is to filter the air according to different parameters and levels.

There are nine different levels of cleanroom. These levels are governed by the NF EN ISO 14644 standard and designate a cleanroom ranging from ISO 1 (where the concentration of particles in the air is lowest) to ISO 9 (where the particles in the air are highest).

Note that the terms ‘cleanroom’ and ‘cleanroom’ refer to the same type of room. However, a cleanroom corresponds to a cleanroom that complies with EN ISO 14644 regulations, whereas a cleanroom is simply a room in which the concentration of particles is below average, but which does not comply with any particular regulated standard.

When should a cleanroom be used?

Cleanrooms are used for the manufacture, processing or packaging of certain sensitive products. These are products that must not be exposed to any kind of disturbance: too much humidity, variable temperature, too much light, too many germs or an environment that could be contaminated.

There are many sectors of activity that need a cleanroom on a daily basis. Health and medicine, for example, require a completely sterile environment for the manufacture of surgical equipment. In the chemical, pharmaceutical and aerospace industries, manufacturing conditions also need to be closely monitored.

Finally, the agri-food sector is undoubtedly the most important area in which a cleanroom is needed for the manufacturing, processing and packaging of its products.
